First weather warning: Yellow warning: Memorial Day weekend will be stormy at times

ROCHESTER, NY — A yellow alert is in effect for Saturday and Monday, meaning our weather will be a bit problematic at times over the long Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday will start dry with some sun, but scattered showers and a few thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon. The wet weather will occur between 1pm and 7pm, which is the afternoon and evening when many people are likely to be outside enjoying the holiday or having outdoor barbecues.

While much of the day will be dry, isolated thunderstorms that develop during peak temperatures may bring gusty winds and small hail, as well as lightning. Monday is a little different, as most of the day will be wet weather, with the chance of rain from time to time, but it will be less unstable, so the thunderstorms that develop will be less intense.

Still, Monday’s weather will affect your outdoor plans, and you’ll need to be aware of the risk of lightning strikes. The timing of thunderstorms may change slightly, so check back regularly on air and online this weekend for updates.

Sunday is looking lovely on the contract with more sunshine, dry weather and seasonably mild air. Our pattern then begins to change on Tuesday with cooler air moving in and scattered showers through Wednesday.

The unsettled weather is expected to clear on Thursday and sunshine and warmer air will slowly return towards the end of next week.
