Beirut:

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it attacked northern Israel on Tuesday, including with “drones loaded with explosives,” a day after an attack claimed by the Iran-backed movement killed two soldiers there.

There have been regular cross-border exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah since the Palestinian Hamas’ unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7 triggered a war in the Gaza Strip.

In recent weeks, Hezbollah has stepped up its attacks, which it says supports the people of Gaza and its ally Hamas, and the Israeli military has moved deeper into Lebanese territory.

Hezbollah fighters “fired explosives-laden drones at enemy soldiers and officers” on Tuesday, the group said in a statement.

At the same time, other drones “targeted one of the Iron Dome (air defense system) platforms,” the activists said, adding in separate statements that they carried out further attacks on northern Israel, including with guided missiles.

Israel’s army said on Tuesday that two soldiers had been killed in the north a day earlier.

On Monday, Hezbollah claimed there had been a drone attack on troops near Metula in northern Israel. The Israeli military said it had identified “a UAV (drone) that came from Lebanon” and entered the area.

At least 390 people, mostly activists but also more than 70 civilians, have been killed in Lebanon in nearly seven months of cross-border violence, according to an AFP tally.

Israel said 13 soldiers and nine civilians were killed on its side of the border.

Tens of thousands of people were displaced on both sides.
