A North Carolina teacher has been arrested on allegations that she sexually assaulted a student.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said in a news release that South Mecklenburg High School teacher Gabriela Neufeld, 26, was discovered on Nov. 29 allegedly engaging in “sexual activity” with an 18-year-old male student.

Neufeld was arrested and accused of sexual activity with a student by a teacher. According to local news outlet WCNC, she was held at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center pending her release on bail.

During a court hearing Thursday, prosecutors said the 18-year-old student’s mother became aware of the alleged sexual contact during the Thanksgiving holiday after noticing her through the Life360 app, a family safety location app Son missed a sports practice. She then tracked his location and allegedly saw him having sexual contact with Neufeld in a parked car, according to WSOC-TV.

She took photos of the car and the license plate and then called the police, who arrived on scene and arrested Neufeld, the outlet says.

According to court documents obtained by WBTV, Neufeld and the student allegedly committed a sexual act at least five times since October 18.

Under North Carolina state law, it is illegal for teachers and students to have sexual relations unless the teacher is “lawfully married to the student.”

A judge ruled that Neufeld must be monitored electronically and not have any communication with the 18-year-old student.

According to WCNC, Neufield was a biology and AP biology teacher for students in ninth through 12th grade at South Mecklenburg High School. The principal shared a message with the school’s families, obtained by the outlet, that said the school was “taking this matter seriously.”

“We share your concerns about this situation,” the message said. “The safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance to all of us, and while this is a concerning situation, it is being managed by law enforcement.”
