Bail set at $10 million for man shot by a Huber Heights officer following a road rage incident

He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $10 million bond.

Officer Shawn Waler shot Haught after a short chase Sunday that ended near a home in the 9400 block of Taylorsville Road. As the chase ended, dashboard camera footage showed Haught exiting the vehicle and facing police with a gun in his hand.

“You can clearly see the suspect facing the officers and raising a black AR-15 rifle and pointing it directly at the officers,” Chief Mark Lightner said during a news conference Wednesday. “The officer closest to the suspect opened fire, catching the suspect turning and attempting to flee with the rifle in hand.”

Haught dropped the gun as he walked around the house before collapsing on the porch. Police rendered aid to Haught until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was booked into the Montgomery County Jail early Thursday morning.

Police seized the firearm, a fully automatic DPMS SBR air rifle.

Waler, a 19-year veteran, is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, which is department policy, Lightner said. Waler also shot a man in April 2023 while responding to a report of shots fired in Butler Twp. A grand jury declined to indict him.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

According to Huber Heights Communication Center records, at 1:33 a.m. Sunday, a 911 caller reported that a man, later identified as Haught, had shot out the driver’s side window and rammed his vehicle. The man told dispatchers he was heading to the Shell gas station at 8007 State Route 235.

When police arrived, they saw the suspect vehicle driving away and attempted to stop it. The vehicle reportedly continued south on State Route 235 at a high rate of speed.

On New Carlisle Pike, officers performed a precision immobilization technique (PIT) maneuver to attempt to stop the vehicle but were unsuccessful.

The vehicle eventually came to a stop after entering a grassy area in the 9400 block of Taylorsville Road.

During the pursuit, officers observed Haught throwing items from the vehicle. Lightner said they seized methamphetamine in that area.
