A man has been arrested in connection with four rapes in Manchester city centre in February this year.

It is believed that the perpetrators “intoxicated” the men and women before raping their victims and “then taking away their personal belongings,” Greater Manchester Police said.

The suspect, in his 40s, is in custody for questioning, police added.

“These are truly gruesome crimes,” said Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt, who is responsible for rape and other sexual crimes.

“Our professionals have supported and continue to support those involved in these incidents. We are doing everything we can to provide them with the appropriate care they need now.”

He added: “No one should feel unsafe walking the streets of Greater Manchester.

“We remain committed to bringing justice to all victims of rape and will not tolerate any form of sexual violence in our communities.

“We urge anyone who has experienced sexual violence or abuse to come forward and report it to us.

“Every report is thoroughly investigated.”
