Sheriff’s office investigates motorcycle crash in Baldwin

Route 113 was closed for about three hours Saturday morning for investigations, but has since reopened.

BALDWIN, Maine – The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that occurred Saturday morning in Baldwin involving a car and a motorcycle.

At around 8:30 a.m., officers received reports of a serious crash involving a car and a motorcycle on Route 113, also known as Pequawket Trail, in Baldwin, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

At the scene, an investigation revealed that a red 2014 Mazda driven by 18-year-old Yousif Abbas of Brownfield was traveling west on Route 113 at a “high rate of speed.” According to troopers, Abbas attempted to pass a vehicle traveling in the same direction. While attempting to pass, his vehicle was in the eastbound lane and crossed into oncoming traffic on the crest of a hill.

Deputies said a 2022 Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 29-year-old Isaiah Reynolds of Hiram was traveling in the eastbound lane when Reynolds attempted to avoid the Mazda driven by Abbas.

“Reynolds was unable to avoid the collision due to the speed of the Mazda and because it was entirely in his lane,” the press release said.

The Mazda then struck the motorcycle head-on, causing it to flip and eject Reynolds, the release said. Reynolds was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred and he suffered “serious injuries.” He was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

“After the collision with the motorcycle, Abbas’ vehicle left the road and overturned several times,” the press release states. “Abbas was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and also suffered serious injuries.”

He was also taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment.

The deputies cited speed, incorrect/unsafe overtaking and negligent driving as the causes of the accident.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Reconstruction Team, Maine State Police and Gorham Police continue to investigate.

The sheriff’s office said that after the investigation is complete, it will meet with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether to file charges in connection with the accident.

Route 113 was closed for about three hours for investigations, but has now reopened.

Baldwin Fire, Standish EMS and Sacopee Valley EMS assisted on scene.
