The Houston Astros have discussed two major trades with the Mets

The Houston Astros have had a great run throughout the 2024 MLB season. Despite numerous injury issues and adversity, the team has remained competitive.

In fact, the Astros currently sit at 49-44 and are just two games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West race.

With the success they’ve had recently, Houston is expected to be aggressive at the MLB trade deadline later this month. The Astros will look to add more talent to become a more serious contender.

According to Jim Bowden of The AthleticHouston has shown interest in a major trade with the New York Mets. They are targeting two potential players in those discussions.

These two players are Pete Alonso and Luis Severino.

“Astros general manager Dana Brown has made it clear to other front office that he is focused on adding a veteran starter and a long- or short-term solution at first base. He has talked to the Mets about Luis Severino and Pete Alonso, and has discussed Christian Walker with the Diamondbacks, Cody Bellinger with the Cubs and Andrew Vaughn with the White Sox.”

At this point in the season, the Mets don’t seem like a team that would rather sell. However, it’s pretty clear that they won’t be a World Series contender.

That being said, New York is 47-45 and trying to get back into the race.

While a trade isn’t extremely likely, both players would be a great fit for the Astros.

Alonso had another solid season in 2024. He played in 92 games, batting .243/.322/.455 to go along with 18 home runs and 49 RBIs. Those numbers would be a huge upgrade for Houston at first base.

As for Severino, he would be a very solid addition to the Astros’ rotation. He started 18 games, going 6-3, with a 3.78 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 109.2 innings pitched. Severino may not be a superstar, but he is a great middle-of-the-rotation starting pitcher.

Both of these players would be ideal targets. They may not be available, but pursuing them is a wise decision.

It will be interesting to see what the trade deadline has in store for Houston. They appear poised to be very active in trade discussions. Clearly, the Mets are a team to watch as a potential trade partner.
