Police are currently on site near Hereford Cathedral and have set up a cordon (BBC)

A woman was raped on the grounds of Hereford Cathedral, police said.

West Mercia Police have launched an investigation following reports of the attack in Hereford city centre at around 03:00 BST on Friday.

There is currently a police cordon and the cathedral grounds are closed.

Officers have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.

Det Insp Ben Pearson said: “I recognise that this incident is causing great concern among the local community but I would like to reassure the public that we are conducting a thorough investigation.”

“There will be an increased police presence near the cathedral for the duration of the investigation and the victim will be supported by specially trained officers.”
