British police said five people were slightly injured when English fans were attacked by Dutch fans ahead of the 2024 European Championship semi-final in Dortmund on Wednesday.

According to police, a group of Dutch fans attacked English fans in bars and tried to steal flags.

They said that the majority of Dutch fans were there to “enjoy the game” but that there were some fan groups that were considered “a risk”.

British police are working with local police in Germany for the match, which starts at 20:00 (BST).

A video has emerged on social media that appears to show a group of fans throwing chairs towards a bar, including a man who appears to be wearing a Dutch football shirt.

People are then seen protecting themselves and heading inside the bar before more fights break out with objects being thrown at and out of the bar.

A man called Leo, who works in the bar, told the BBC: “At first there were two or three people. I tried to separate them, but then it got too heated and everything flew around.”

Leo added that the bar’s television was damaged in the incident, meaning the game can no longer be shown.

A statement from the British Football Policing Unit said: “We are aware of some reports and videos of unrest in Dortmund.”

“Apparently there have been several cases where Dutch fans have attacked English fans in bars and tried to steal flags.

“We are also aware that in addition to the tens of thousands of Dutch fans who are enjoying the game, there are also groups of at-risk fans who have travelled to Dortmund from the Netherlands.”

The Dutch Football Association said 110,000 Dutch fans travelled to Dortmund, compared to 40,000 from England.

The winner of the game will face Spain in the final on Sunday.
