Yellowstone National Park shooting: Suspect killed by park rangers after allegedly making threats; area near Canyon Lodge closed

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyoming – An armed suspect who allegedly made threats in Yellowstone National Park is dead after a shootout with rangers, the National Park Service said.

A Yellowstone Police ranger was also injured in the incident, the NPS said.

The “significant police incident” occurred overnight and Thursday morning in Canyon Village in the central part of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the NPS said.

“Rangers responded to a report of an individual with a firearm making threats,” NPS said in a news release. “When rangers contacted the individual, an exchange of gunfire occurred between the individual and law enforcement rangers.”

The name of the deceased suspect is not currently being released.

The ranger injured in the incident is in stable condition and is being treated at a nearby hospital, NPS said.

There is no active threat to the public, the NPS said.

The FBI is conducting the investigation into the incident with assistance from NPS special agents.

Due to the ongoing investigation, an area around the Canyon Lodge complex remains closed.

According to authorities, no further information will be released at this time.
