Australian tourist claims she was ‘raped’ while on holiday in the Maldives

An Australian tourist claims she was raped by a butler at a luxury resort in the Maldives.

Xu Yitong, 26, a student from Sydney, said she arrived in the Maldives on June 6 for a short solo trip. She was due to leave on June 10, but extended her stay and booked a room at a five-star resort in the Faroe Islands that costs $4,000 a night.

The vacationer – who today gave her written consent to be named publicly to ViralPress – said she was then assigned a butler who showed her the amenities.

Shortly after checking in, Xu, who is of Chinese descent but now lives in Australia, said she accidentally damaged her phone with water and was unable to contact her family. When the butler was sent to her room to help, he lent her his phone but then allegedly began sexually harassing her.

Xu filed a complaint of “criminal sexual contact” with Sergeant Abdul Harris at Thulusdhoo station on June 11, but claimed officers were unhelpful. She posted about the case on Twitter on June 18.

The tourist wrote online that he “tried to kiss her.”

“He took a piece of gum, started chewing on it and asked me if I wanted to kiss him. I was stunned. I was speechless. I said no, I don’t like physical contact. I took my computer and translated it for him in case he didn’t understand.

“Then he said, ‘Don’t worry, you can feel comfortable with me,’ leaned over and touched my mouth. I didn’t open my mouth and he said, ‘Yoly, you don’t have to be ashamed, sex is OK,’ and tried to open my mouth with his tongue. He asked me if I was gay or not because I didn’t admit it.

“I was in my pajamas. He started putting his tongue in my mouth and said, ‘I’m going to be a gentleman.’ Then he pushed me onto the bed, started taking off his pants and put his penis in my mouth twice. Then he touched my genitals and tried to have sex with me.”

When the butler encountered resistance from the guests, he allegedly masturbated on their computer screen, wiped off his semen with a towel and left, telling Xu she simply needed “time to open up.”

Xu said she reported the incident to hotel management, but they “helped make it seem like nothing” and tried to confiscate the laptop and semen-soaked towel from her room.

“I told them that it should only be handed over to the police,” Xu said. “The police came and took my statement. They took samples from my mouth and told me that it would take a week for the results to come back and that I should leave before the results came back.”

The officers told her that they had “no reason to arrest the employee.”

Xu further claimed that she was given a medical examination and had bruises all over her body. She said she was then kicked out of the hotel because they “could no longer arrange accommodation for me.”

“I left the hotel and there wasn’t even an apology,” she said. “You only teach your maids to ask for tips. I was raped in your hotel and you did nothing. You told me I did this to get a free stay. I paid the hotel the full amount. I am a Chinese woman living in Australia. My family is well-reputed and wealthy.”

Local media reported that the Maldivian police have not yet made any arrests based on the tourist’s complaint of sexual abuse filed on June 6.

They said they had taken the “necessary samples” for the investigation, but declined to provide any further information on the case.

The hotel has not commented on the alleged incident.
