TASUED suspends exams after student murdered by suspected cult members

The Management of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun Statehas suspended the ongoing examinations of the second semester of the university for an indefinite period.

The decision followed the killing of a final year student of the institution, Ayinla Fabiyi, by suspected cult members on the main campus.

In a statement released on Thursday by the institution’s public relations officer, Odubela Ayotunde, all examinations on campus were suspended indefinitely.

“The university administration has ordered that all examinations scheduled for Thursday, July 4, and Friday, July 5, 2024, be suspended until further notice.

“An examination had just ended and 400 students were celebrating the customary ‘signing out’ outside the lecture hall when some unknown assailants carried the said victim, identified as Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, Faculty of Humanities. He was eventually attacked.

“Fabiyi’s colleagues assumed that the persons in question were celebrating with him as it was also his birthday. Suspicion arose when he later tried to resist being carried away. Hence, they started dragging him towards the CENVOS building of the university.

“Security personnel on site immediately alerted the security unit, which responded immediately,” the statement said.

When Mr Fabiyi’s attackers saw security forces, they reportedly fled through the bush.

Mr Fabiyi was seriously injured but still alive. He was rushed to the University Health Centre and from there referred to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital for further treatment.

The victim was later transferred to Babcock University Teaching Hospital due to the severity of his head injuries, but reportedly died during transport to Babcock.

Mrs Odubela clarified that there was no gunfire at the scene or anywhere on campus, but said the late Fabiyi was not abducted from the examination hall as some people had reported.

“He did not take the Level 300 examination, HIS 329 (Modern European Political Thought), which was held in the examination hall.

“The university has now reported the incident to the Nigerian police so that they can take the necessary action. Some people have also been arrested.

“The university strongly condemns this heinous act and expresses its condolences to the parents/guardians of the deceased. We also pray that the Lord Almighty consoles the family,” she said.

Mrs Odubela advised parents and students at the institution to remain calm. She urged students to go about their business as the situation was under control.

“The university management appreciates the quick intervention of the Nigerian police, which ensured a respite on campus.
