Arrested rape defendant tries to escape and is injured in police shooting

Guwahati, June 26 (PTI) – An arrested man accused of raping a minor girl was injured in police firing while trying to escape from custody in Assam’s Udalguri district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday.

A total of five people were arrested for raping the girl.

The Chief Minister directed Director General of Police GP Singh to investigate the case under the supervision of a senior officer.

“Five culprits have been arrested in connection with Mazbat PS case No. 30/24, which involves the rape of a minor girl by several boys on June 22. The main accused was injured by police firing while trying to escape yesterday,” Sarma wrote on X.

The girl was allegedly lured to a remote location by the five men at the Dhunsuri tea plantation in Mazbat police station on Saturday under a pretext and the family filed a complaint with the police the next day.

Since then, the police have arrested the five accused from different locations in Udalguri and Darrang districts.

One of the defendants attempted to escape from custody on Tuesday evening and was injured when police opened fire to prevent him from escaping.

“I have directed @DGPAssamPolice to conduct a thorough investigation into the case under the supervision of a senior officer,” the chief minister added. PTI DG DG NN
