Pittsburgh International Airport issues warning; travelers beware

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA — With Independence Day just around the corner, Pittsburgh International Airport has issued an alert for anyone planning to fly during the upcoming long holiday weekend.

Airport officials are advising travelers with flights between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. to arrive 2.5 to 3 hours before their scheduled departure to avoid long lines at ticket sales and security checkpoints. The warning was issued after some passengers missed their flights on Monday morning due to extremely long lines.

“We are experiencing record-breaking crowds this summer, which means longer lines at TSA security checkpoints,” said a post on the airport’s social media pages. “We are working with TSA to streamline security checkpoints as much as possible.”

According to Blue Sky News, the airport’s news website, 18,255 departing passengers passed through security on May 24, the highest number of passengers recorded daily at the airport since 2019.

The problem of long queues is expected to be solved when the new $1.5 billion Landside Terminal opens next year. The terminal will offer 11 security checkpoints, including a special family checkpoint.
