dangerous heat and isolated storms

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Today and tomorrow are First Alert Weather Days as dangerously high heat and humidity are expected today and some strong to severe storms are possible tonight and again Wednesday.

Today will be mostly sunny, hot and humid. Today will likely be the hottest day of the year so far. Highs will rise to 35 to 40 degrees this afternoon and heat index readings will rise to 39 to 41 degrees. A heat advisory is in effect for much of the Tri-State region, including Evansville, from noon to 8 p.m.

It may warm up a bit tonight, but there will also be a chance of thunderstorms. Isolated thunderstorms are possible, especially between 5 and 10 p.m., but an isolated thunderstorm is also possible outside of that time frame. Not everyone will see the rain, but any thunderstorms that develop could be severe, bringing damaging wind gusts, small hail and heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding.

Another wave of storms will move across our region from northwest to southeast on Wednesday, primarily during the first half of the day. Once again, an isolated strong to severe storm will be possible, but widespread severe weather is not expected. As these storms move away, cooler, drier air will move in and bring us some relief from the heat! Highs on Wednesday will be between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, with heat index values around 35 degrees Celsius.

Thursday will be the most pleasant day of the week. Temperatures will reach 30 degrees with plenty of sunshine, but the humidity will be very bearable, so the heat index is no cause for concern.

Heat and humidity will increase again Friday and Saturday, with highs in the 90s on Friday and around 35 degrees on Saturday. Saturday could be another dangerously hot day, with heat index readings in the triple digits. A few thunderstorms are possible later Saturday, which could linger into Sunday morning. After these thunderstorms, our highs will climb back into the 90s early next week.
