NJ Transit train service to and from NY Penn Station suspended due to Amtrak overhead line issues

NEW JERSEY (WABC) — New Jersey Transit rail service to and from New York Penn Station has been suspended due to problems with Amtrak’s overhead wires.

NJ Transit says the problem is with the overhead wires in one of the Hudson River tunnels.

Midtown Direct trains are rerouted to Hoboken. NJ Transit rail tickets/passes are mutually accepted by NJ Transit and private bus companies and PATH at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street, New York.

Customers are urged to visit njtransit.com for alternative service information.

Monday night’s problems follow a week of delays and cancellations at NJ Transit and Amtrak last week.

NJ Transit and CEO Kevin Corbett released a statement Friday afternoon calling the problems “unacceptable.”

But perhaps there is some good news from this difficult week of traffic in the Garden State: New Jersey has reached a preliminary agreement with the state’s most profitable companies to temporarily pay higher taxes to finance NJ Transit.

The plan would require the state’s 600 companies that generate at least $10 million in annual profits to pay a 2.5 percent tax on all profits for five years.

In return, the state will refrain from reintroducing the 7% sales tax (previously 6.625%), which is a major point of contention among companies that strictly oppose an increase in corporate tax.

Both the “transit tax” and a final state budget must be approved by parliament next week. The budget expires on June 30.

This is breaking news. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
