The summer solstice is on Thursday. What to expect

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Although temperatures have felt summery over the past few weeks, Thursday will be the first official day of summer.

On Thursday we will experience the longest daylight hours for the first time in 228 years.

At the summer solstice, the Earth tilts toward the sun to receive the most direct light, so we’ll see the most sunlight on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, we saw the sun rise at 6:06 a.m. The sun will set at 8:29 p.m., leaving us with 14 hours and 23 minutes of daylight left—the longest day in over 200 years.

The first full moon of the summer happens to coincide with the Strawberry Moon. The moon will set on Friday.

Don’t expect the moon to be pink now. The Strawberry Moon indicates the relatively short harvest season for strawberries in the Northeastern United States.
