Suspect killed after shootout with Doña Ana County sheriff’s deputy

LAS CRUCES, NM (KRQE) – A suspect is dead following a shootout with Doña Ana County Sheriff’s officers Wednesday night.

Officials say a male suspect called 911 and reported he was driving drunk in Las Cruces and needed to be stopped. At around 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, a DASO officer found the vehicle near Valley and Lohman. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop, but the suspect did not stop and continued driving erratically. DASO says the vehicle suddenly stopped in the Shalem Colony area near the river and gunfire erupted between the officer and the driver. The suspect was injured in the shooting and taken to Mountain View Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officer was not injured in the shooting. The Officer Involved Shooting Task Force is investigating the incident.
