Teenager shot and killed in Lynn Market Basket parking lot, prosecutor says

A 17-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the parking lot of the Market Basket grocery store in Lynn, according to Massachusetts authorities. Lynn Police Chief Chris Reddy said officers responded to Federal Street shortly before 9:10 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of gunshots in the area. Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said Sunday morning the boy was in a vehicle parked outside the Market Basket at 40 Federal Street when several shots were fired at the vehicle. One of the shots struck the victim, and the vehicle he was in subsequently rolled into the bushes in a ravine, according to Tucker. Reddy said Lynn police found the juvenile victim with a gunshot wound in a crashed car. The juvenile victim was taken to Salem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld as authorities work to notify his next of kin. “The violence is extremely disturbing and we remain steadfast in our determination to stamp it out by any means necessary and work for the peace our community deserves,” Lynn Mayor Jared Nicholson said in a statement. The shooting is being investigated by Lynn police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to Tucker’s office. Tucker and Reddy said that at this time, investigators do not believe the shooting was random and that the victim was targeted.
