One dead, one in custody after crossbow shooting in Somerset County

SOMERSET, Pa. (WTAJ) – Authorities in Somerset County are investigating a suspected homicide that occurred when a man shot another person with a crossbow.

On Friday, Pennsylvania State Police responded to a residence in Somerset Township after receiving reports of a shooting. When officers arrived on scene, they found a man dead after being struck by a crossbow bolt, according to a news release from the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office.

After an investigation, officials believe the shooting occurred during a verbal altercation between Travis Sherer of Somerset and the victim and that Shearer eventually shot the victim in the chest with a crossbow.

The victim was identified in the press release as Eric Miller, Shearer’s half-brother.

Shearer is charged with manslaughter and is currently being held in the Somerset County Jail with no bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 25 at 9 a.m.

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
