1 dead, 2 adults and 2 children injured after apartment fire in South Shore

CHICAGO – One man is dead and two adults and two children were injured in a fire early Saturday morning in the city’s South Shore neighborhood.

According to Chicago police, a fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. in a three-family home in the 2400 block of East 78th Street.


When firefighters arrived on scene, a 24-year-old man was pronounced dead and two boys — ages 2 and 7 — were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital. Police said the 7-year-old was in critical condition and the 2-year-old was in good condition.

In addition to the deceased 24-year-old and two children hospitalized, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were also taken to local hospitals in good condition. The 27-year-old man’s injury was not related to the fire.

According to police, at least 23 people have become homeless as a result of the fire.

The incident remains under investigation.
