Cheo Hodari Coker recalls the knife attack on Young Buck during the infamous brawl at the 2004 VIBE Awards

Coker then explained that the awards ceremony was going smoothly until Quincy Jones came on stage to announce Dre during the ceremony. Jones went off script, which gave the man, Jimmy James Johnson, enough time to attack Dre and Buck to get revenge.

“It was a wild affair,” Coker continued. “A fight broke out. Young Buck walked up to him from his table with a knife and stabbed him… and in the back of the room… Suge was laughing his head off… was he responsible? (The question mark is real)…”

He added, “All I know is that they couldn’t stop the live broadcast… so the director got his shot and the reactions… but not the ones he wanted, AND it made the NATIONAL news that night… and the 11 o’clock news…”

According to reports, Johnson approached Dre at the time and asked for an autograph. After being turned away, Johnson punched Dre in the head and tried to flee to the nearest exit. The fight broke out, police officers tried to break it up, and Buck managed to stab Johnson in the chest.

Santa Monica police issued a warrant for Buck’s arrest after video footage showed him taking part in the fight. During preliminary hearings, a judge ruled there was enough evidence to seek a jury trial, but Buck took a plea deal that spared him a trip to court.
