American astronaut William Anders, a crew member of the Apollo 8, died Friday while flying a plane that crashed off the coast of Washington, a report said.

Retired American astronaut William Anders, who was part of the Apollo 8 crew, has been identified as the pilot of the plane that crashed in the waters off the San Juan Islands on Friday afternoon. FOX 13
Anders was 80 years old. FOX 13

The plane, an older Air Force T-34 Mentor owned by Anders, crashed into the waters off the San Juan Islands, according to flight data and FAA records obtained by FOX 13 Seattle.

A search and rescue mission is underway at the crash site.
