City launches new fraud warning program

Published: 04 June 2024, 07:00

A new program from Newtown City Council allows residents to be informed about their property.

Fraud Alert users can sign up with their email address and any combination of their names so they are notified when a document, deed or mortgage is registered in their name.

Although the program focuses on combating fraud, registrar Debbie Halstead believes it has a larger purpose.

“It’s rare that someone takes someone else’s property. You know, in small towns, it’s easier to find out if something is wrong,” she said. “I think they should use the program to be aware that they have the ability to check their property history online.”

“Not only because of the fraud alert, but also because they can access it at any time,” Halstead said.

After a smooth launch in August 2021, Fraud Alert has already amassed nearly 400 users and hopefully more to come. The City Clerk’s Office will also soon be releasing a flyer with records of current users and more information for property owners to access their own records 24/7 on searchiqs.com.
