Man sentenced to seven years in prison for rape and attempted murder of Dalit woman in Tamil Nadu | News from Chennai

VILLUPURAM: Villupuram High Court Judge A Packia Jothi has sentenced a 31-year-old man to seven years in prison for raping and attempting to murder a Dalit woman in a village near Gingee.

The crime occurred on June 1 last year.

The judge delivered the verdict on Friday. She also sentenced him to a term of imprisonment of five years, one year and six months under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. All the terms would be served concurrently. She imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.

In another case, the judge sentenced a 36-year-old man to seven years in prison for forcing his wife to commit suicide, but his mother acquitted her of the charges.

According to the prosecution, P Patchaiappan, 38, and his mother P Padmini tortured his wife P Shalini, 36, within a year of their wedding and forced her to commit suicide on December 5, 2020.

The Avalurpet police filed a charge against Patchaiappan and his mother under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC and arrested them after the deceased woman’s father, Sekar, 60, of a village near Tiruvannamalai, filed a complaint.
