Alert level for Philippine volcano raised after “explosive eruption”: Volcanology agency

The alert level for a volcano in the Philippines was raised on Monday after an “explosive eruption” sent a five-kilometer-high cloud of ash and steam into the sky, the volcanology agency said.

Kanlaon volcano on central Negros island erupted shortly before 7:00 p.m. (11:00 GMT), prompting warnings to nearby residents to wear face masks due to the risk of ashfall.
