Gang rape in Bengal: 13 sentenced to 20 years in prison – News

Kolkata – A court in West Bengal on Saturday sentenced 13 people convicted of raping a tribal woman in the state’s Birbhum district to 20 years in prison.

The 20-year-old woman was gang-raped in Subalpur village in the district in January after a mock court found her “guilty” of having an affair with a man outside her community.

“Additional District Judge of Bolpur Court Siddarth Roychowdhury sentenced all 13 accused to 20 years of imprisonment. All the accused were convicted of gang rape, assault and false imprisonment,” said public prosecutor Shamsul Zoha.

During the trial, the court heard 31 witnesses, including medical experts and police officers.

The court also ordered the district administration to look after any relatives of the 13 accused, including the village chief who ordered the gang rape.

The incident sparked nationwide outrage.
