Prison officials found Birchfield unresponsive and called medical personnel who attempted to save his life. He was eventually taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Officials said he was arrested by Warr Acres police on May 31 and is being held on charges of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 12. Bail is set at $265,000.

“The circumstances of his death are under investigation and at this time it appears to be a suicide. As standard protocol, all deaths are investigated as homicides until the State Medical Examiner’s Office makes a final determination,” the ODOC said in a news release Sunday.

On May 28, officials found another unconscious inmate at their facility, who was later found dead.
