Renowned mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja, celebrated for his record-breaking ascent of the world’s 14 highest peaks, is facing serious allegations of sexual harassment and abuse. A May 31 New York Times article by Anna Callaghan and Jenny Vrentas states that several female climbers have made allegations against Purja.

The article draws attention to the growing number of allegations of sexual misconduct among mountaineers – a problem that goes beyond the actual risks of storms and avalanches. The former Miss Finland Lotta Hintsa And April Leonardo are two of the people who have come forward to talk about their experiences with Purja’s alleged harassment.

Lotta Hintsa recounted an incident in a hotel room where Purja made unwanted physical advances. She described being “relieved when he started masturbating, hoping the episode would soon be over.” Dr. April Leonardo described a disturbing encounter in which Purja asked her, “When can I get on top of you?” shortly after an alleged physical assault. These comments highlight a pattern of behavior that the ladies found extremely disturbing and demoralizing.

Nirmal Purja, who rose to fame thanks to his incredible performance in the Netflix series 14 Peaks, has been involved in several scandals recently, including allegations that he cut his ropes near the summit of Mount Everest. These allegations tarnish his reputation in the climbing community despite his accomplishments.

Purja vehemently denied all allegations in an article he posted on his Instagram account on May 31. In response to the allegations made in the New York Times article, he defended his innocence and refuted the accusers’ portrayal of his actions.
