SNL Alum Chris Redd Was Allegedly Attacked Outside the NYC Comedy Show

Chris Redd was allegedly attacked on Wednesday night.

The Saturday Night Live alum was scheduled to perform a comedy at New York’s Comedy Cellar in Greenwich Village when he was allegedly attacked by a stranger.

An NYPD DCPI spokesperson tells PEOPLE that a complaint was filed Wednesday evening after a 37-year-old man got out of his car to approach the venue. The man was punched in the face by a suspect who was not arrested. The suspected attacker fled the scene.

Redd was transported to Bellevue Hospital. The investigation is ongoing. Redd’s team did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

TMZ first reported the alleged attack, including video footage showing bystanders supporting Redd as blood from the alleged attack splattered the sidewalk.

Redd is best known for his performances SNL from 2017 to 2022. He announced his departure from the show before season 49 – and moved on to what became known as SNLMass exit in 2022.

Along with his years afterwards SNL – in which Redd stepped into the shoes of Kanye West, US Senator Cory Booker and many others – the comedian is known for his roles in TV shows Kenan, broke And Disjointed. Redd’s comedy special Why am I like this? is set to premiere on HBO Max on November 3rd.
