Woman who was attacked and brained in the canals of Venice, California, has died

The second female victim of the brutal April 6 attack in the Venice Canals neighborhood of Los Angeles has died after being declared brain dead.

Sarah Alden, 53, originally from Massachusetts, was in the process of moving to Venice Beach when the incident occurred, the Westside Current reported Friday.

Alden, a mother of two adult sons, was declared brain dead on Monday after being attacked on the evening of April 6 while returning to her Airbnb accommodation.

A woman named Mary Klein, 54, was the first victim to be attacked while taking an evening stroll, Breitbart News reported on April 13. The woman suffered severe bruising and doctors had to wire her jaw shut.

Klein claims the suspect in the case tried to kill her.

The Westside Current article continued:

Anthony Francisco Jones, 29, was arrested in San Diego on April 11 and booked into the LAPD West Bureau on April 12 in connection with the assault on the two women. Jones was charged with two counts of rape, one count each of sexual penetration with use of force, one count of sodomy with use of force, one count of assault, one count of torture and one count of attempted murder.

Jones eventually pleaded not guilty to all charges. Meanwhile, police described the suspect as a black man who is 6’1″, 200 pounds, and homeless, according to Breitbart News.

“Authorities say Jones does not appear to have a criminal record in Los Angeles County, but his background, including his legal status, is unclear. Jones is being held without bail and his next court date is June 11 at the LAX Superior Courthouse in Westchester, according to county jail records,” the Westside Current report said.

Klein was recently discharged from a local health center after suffering multiple seizures. She will not be able to return to work for several months as the wires were just removed from her jaw and she is still in the healing phase.

Before Alden’s death, KTLA obtained surveillance footage showing the suspect walking around with a suspected stolen bottle of alcohol:

As of Sunday afternoon, a GoFundMe page to support a memorial for Alden had raised more than $29,000 of its $150,000 goal.

“All funds will go directly to Sarah’s two sons for their memorial, funeral, medical expenses and to cover the cost of their college education to enable them to live a life without their beloved mother,” the page states.
