Makurung monster gets life sentence!

The South African police and other law enforcement agencies work hard to arrest those who abuse children and women.

The accused, 40-year-old Kgaogelo Lekgau, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Thabamoopo Regional Court for the rape of a 12-year-old girl in Makurung, Limpopo.

According to police spokesman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the case was closed on Friday, May 24.

He said the court found that a 12-year-old victim was on her way home from a shopping mall at around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday, December 20, 2020, and the mother asked the suspect to accompany the victim as it was already late.

On the way to Makurung, the accused threatened the victim and dragged her into a bush where he raped her.

“The victim alerted his mother upon arrival. The police were informed of the incident and Lebowakgomo police opened a case of rape,” he said.

He said the Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit had been activated and Sergeant Makopo Magaila had been assigned to further investigate the case. The suspect was arrested in Makurung on Thursday, December 31, 2020.

“Due to careful and thorough investigation, the accused was denied bail, however, the court later granted him bail of R3 000. The accused was found guilty on Tuesday, 14 November 2023 and has been behind bars since then until he is sentenced on Friday, 24 May 2024,” he said.

He said the man was found guilty of count 1, rape, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

“The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the conviction of the accused by the court in Thabomoopo,” he said.
