F1 News: Norris calls Mercedes star an “idiot” after incident in Monaco

Lando Norris called an F1 competitor an “idiot” in a tirade during a chaotic FP3 session in Monaco.

The session was initially interrupted with a red flag when Valtteri Bottas crashed in the swimming pool section and held up Lewis Hamilton.

The session continued after Bottas’ car was removed from the track, but Hamilton locked up, destroying his tires and preventing him from driving ahead of qualifying.

The seven-time world champion was not the only driver to have problems with his tyres in FP3. The McLaren tyres of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris also locked up.

Towards the end of the session, Norris was also involved in an incident in which he almost collided with George Russell’s Mercedes.

While completing a flying lap, Norris entered the tunnel and saw Russell driving slowly on the racing line at the exit.

To avoid an incident, the McLaren slowed down, ruining his lap, and he was quick to berate his rival for holding him up.

“These guys are idiots. All of them. Not all of them. Just some of them,” Norris said over the team radio.

Without referring directly to Russell, Norris’ race engineer answered cryptically.

“I’m not going to ask you to say which ones are and which ones aren’t.”

Norris and Russell were both summoned to the stewards after the session because they were accused of violating Article 33.4 of the Sporting Regulations with the incident.

The British were not the only drivers who almost had a collision in the Monaco tunnel. A terrible incident was also narrowly avoided in Formula 2 on Friday.

Red Bull junior driver Isack Hadjar flew into the tunnel at full speed during qualifying, where the slowed Ritomo Miyata remained out of sight.

Before he knew it, Hadjar Miyata was in front of him, but in a lightning-fast reaction he managed to turn his car away at the last second and thus prevent a devastating incident.
