A teenager was arrested and faces charges after the Memphis shooting

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A teenager is facing multiple charges after police say he stole a car and went on a crime spree through Memphis, shooting people and stealing their belongings.

On January 11 at 8:15 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle theft at the Superman gas station on Summer Avenue.

A white 2016 Dodge Challenger was reportedly parked in front of a taco truck at the gas station. When the owner returned, he saw his car pulling out of the parking lot.

Two hours later, officers responded to a shooting at the Speedway gas station at 4302 Shelby Drive. A man was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Memphis police reportedly reviewed security footage of the encounter. They say the man was pumping gas when a white Dodge Challenger pulled up next to him. The driver exited the vehicle, shot the man and stole $100 and a Smith & Wesson handgun from his car.

According to MPD, the victim was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at the Great China Food Market on Summer Avenue. An employee told police he was working at the business when he saw a man get out of his truck parked outside.

Another suspect reportedly pointed a handgun at the employee, then ran to a white Dodge Challenger and fled the scene. The suspects smashed the front driver’s side window of the truck and got away with a handgun and $400.

Five minutes later, officers responded to a shooting at Sanderlin Avenue and North White Station Road. Upon arrival, police observed a white 2016 Dodge Challenger and a silver Volkswagen Passat apparently involved in an accident.

According to police, a man was found with two gunshot wounds to the leg in the backyard of a home in the 500 block of East Racquet Club Place.

The man told police he was traveling on White Station Road and turned onto Sanderlin Avenue when the Dodge Challenger struck his car.

He says when he got out of his car, the people in the Challenger started shooting at him. He was hit twice in the thigh.

Another man who drove past the scene in a Lexus told police he stopped to check on those involved in the accident. He couldn’t locate anyone in the Challenger.

As the man walked away from the car, he told police he saw a suspect open the passenger door of the Challenger and take a gun from the interior. The suspect then jumped into the man’s Lexus and fled the scene.

The suspect reportedly escaped in the Lexus, which contained a Glock 17, a bulletproof vest and various other items.

Officers found two Visa cards belonging to the Great China Food Market employee in the Dodge Challenger.

Michael Johnson, 19, was identified as a suspect in the shootings and robberies after he was arrested on Feb. 7 and found to be in possession of the stolen Glock 17.

The man at the scene identified Johnson as the suspect who stole his Lexus. Investigators also reportedly secured a search warrant for Johnson’s cell tower records, which showed he was at the scene of each incident listed.

He was taken into custody on Monday, May 6th.

Johnson is charged with three counts of theft of property between $10,000 and $60,000, three counts of theft of property between $2,500 and $10,000, possession of a prohibited weapon, three counts of theft of firearms under $2,500, attempted murder first Two counts of first degree and two counts of possession of a firearm/dangerous felony, specifically aggravated robbery, aggravated assault and burglary of a motor vehicle.

He is being held on $100,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on Wednesday.
