TRAX train derailed in West Valley after ‘serious mechanical problems’, no injuries reported

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (ABC4) – A TRAX train derailed in West Valley City Sunday afternoon, causing the last car to collide with a utility pole, according to the Utah Transit Authority.

UTA originally posted on social media to alert riders to the situation, saying, “Significant delays are expected on the Green Line between West Valley Central and Decker Lake Station due to serious mechanical issues.”

Less than an hour after the original post alerted riders to the problems, UTA cited a “rail issue” as the cause of “significant delays” and told riders that the Decker Lake station would not be serving at this time.

Carl Arky, a spokesman for UTA, told ABC4.com that the TRAX derailment occurred near 3100 South and Decker Lake Boulevard just before 2 p.m.

“So far we don’t know exactly what happened,” Arky said. “It is an investigation that is currently underway.”

Arky said the four-car Green Line train was heading south and was turning a corner. The first three cars made it around the corner, but the last car derailed and crashed into a utility pole, according to Arky.

Arky said the incident caused “significant damage” but no injuries had been reported so far. There were about 16 people on the train, and Arky said he assumed most of them were in the first three cars.

No one was taken to the hospital after the incident, and Arky said UTA hopes to use a crane to clear the car from the tracks later Sunday.

“The hope is that we can restore service to this area tomorrow, but we’re not sure if that will be the case just yet,” Arky said.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area of 3100 South and Decker Lake Boulevard. Arky said service cannot resume until power is restored.

“This doesn’t happen often,” Arky said of TRAX derailments.

Arky urged riders to check the transit app and UTA social media accounts for further updates if they normally rely on the affected TRAX route.

The UTA said a van bridge and a bus bridge have been activated between River Trail and West Valley Central while the derailment is investigated and resolved.
