“There were people doing gardening work”; Witnesses describe quadruple shooting involving Atlanta police – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Witnesses described the shooting that injured three Atlanta police officers and killed a man in the Capitol View neighborhood Saturday evening.

Passing neighbors reported hearing rapid gunfire on Desoto Ave. SW around 5:15 p.m.

“So we heard all the gunshots,” Zachary Adrianessens said. “There were people doing yard work in their yards. »

This happened across the street from Perkerson Park.

“We were very scared because the children and babies were out. We kind of dodged,” Mirage Long said.

On the other side of the neighborhood, a festival was underway near the Beltline.

“Children everywhere. It’s the lantern parade today. We had hordes of kids carrying their lanterns to the belt line to avoid crime scenes,” Adrianessens said.

Atlanta police dispatchers sent the officers to the neighborhood after someone reported an armed man walking the streets. Police said officers approached him, realized he had a gun and a knife and shots rang out.

“I’m not shaken. I am insensitive,” José Escobon said.

Escobon has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years.

“There is a dead body on the ground. So, that in itself is a tragedy,” Escobon said. “It might be someone I know. I don’t know who, but nine times out of ten, it’s someone I know because I’ve been in this neighborhood a long time.

Newer neighbors said gunfire wasn’t unusual there, but four people shot, including three officers, was more devastating than expected.
