Smyrna man arrested for 7th DUI offense in Townsend


TOWNSEND, DE — Delaware State Police have arrested Linwood Sample, a 52-year-old man from Smyrna, Delaware, for driving while intoxicated. It is his seventh offense. The arrest was made early this morning after he was stopped for erratic driving.

On July 28, 2024, at approximately 12:34 a.m., a patrol officer on U.S. Route 13 near Fieldsboro Road observed a gray Dodge Magnum with a fake Pennsylvania license plate weaving between lanes. After observing several traffic violations, the patrol officer conducted a stop on Fieldsboro Road. During the interaction, Sample exhibited clear signs of impairment, prompting the patrol officer to conduct standardized field sobriety tests, which resulted in his arrest.

A subsequent computer check revealed that Sample had six previous convictions for drunk driving. He was transported to Squad 9, where he was arraigned and tried by the Justice of the Peace of the 11th Judicial District. Sample is currently being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $6,500 bail.

  • Myrtle Beach teenager charged with murder of Jakolbi Taylor

    MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Myrtle Beach police have filed charges against 18-year-old Gary Abraham of Aiken, South Carolina, following a violent incident on July 20.

    Abraham is charged with one count of murder, three counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. The charges stem from an incident that occurred in the 1600 block of North Ocean Boulevard, where Abraham shot and killed 16-year-old Jakolbi Taylor.

    Abraham’s initial bail hearing is scheduled for today, July 28, at the Ted C. Collins Law Enforcement Center. Local police have acknowledged the cooperation of several law enforcement agencies in this case, including the Aiken Department of Public Safety, Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, Horry County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

  • Fatal motorcycle accident in Frederica under investigation

    FREDERICA, DE – A tragic incident occurred on Bay Road in Frederica when a motorcycle accident resulted in the death of a 36-year-old man from Felton, Delaware. Delaware State Police are currently investigating the accident, which occurred on Friday, July 27 at approximately 2:41 p.m.

    According to preliminary findings, the man was traveling south on Frederica Road on a Kawasaki ZR1 motorcycle when he failed to negotiate a curve at exit 86. The high speed of the motorcycle contributed to the driver losing control and being ejected from the vehicle.

    The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his name because the family has not yet been notified. After the accident

    Frederica Road was closed for approximately two and a half hours to allow for a thorough investigation and clearing of the accident scene.
