Relief for Suraj Revanna: Special court grants bail in sexual abuse case

Suraj Revanna, the son of JDS leader HD Revanna, was remanded in custody on July 3. He is accused of sexually assaulting a man at his farm on June 16.

Suraj Revanna is the son of Holenarasipura MP HD Revanna and the elder brother of former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna.

A special court granted bail on Monday for Suraj Revannaan MLC of the Janata Dal (Secular) and son of HD Revanna, in the first case pending against him. The court’s decision came after Revanna was remanded in judicial custody on July 3 and his custody extended till July 18. On July 1, 42nd Deputy Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Suraj had handed Revanna over to the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is investigating several cases against him. The complaint was filed at the Holenarasipura police station in Hassan district and alleged that Revanna sexually assaulted a man at his farm on June 16. The complainant accused Revanna of forcing him to kiss and biting his lips and cheeks during the incident.

Suraj Revanna has consistently denied the allegations and claimed that there is a conspiracy against him. “There is a conspiracy against me. Let them do what they want. There is the law and it will decide. There is a complaint against me. The investigation will take place and the truth will come out. I believe in the law. It is a pure political conspiracy but I will not react. The investigation is on and the truth will come out,” Revanna said.

Earlier developments suggested that Suraj Revanna claimed that he was threatened with false allegations of sexual assault. Following this, the police arrested a JD(S) worker and his relatives for allegedly trying to extort money from Revanna by threatening to file a false complaint of sexual assault against him.

Allegations and police action

The allegations against Suraj Revanna were first aired on Kannada news channel Power TV by a resident of Arkalgud on June 21. The man alleged that Suraj Revanna sexually assaulted him at Gannikada farm in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district on June 16. He said he had submitted a petition to the Director General of Police, but no complaint had been filed at that time.

Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda and the brother of former Hassan MP Prajwal Revannawho is also on trial for rape, was subject to considerable media interest.

Commenting on the matter, Home Minister Parameshwara said, “The police department has not received any complaint against MLC Suraj Revanna so far. I came to know about the development through the media.”

On June 20, Suraj Revanna’s partner Shivakumar filed a complaint accusing the man of trying to blackmail Revanna. Shivakumar claimed that the man, who had become a friend and worked for the ‘Suraj Revanna Brigade’, had demanded Rs 50 million to meet the family’s expenses. When Shivakumar refused, the man allegedly threatened to file a police complaint accusing Revanna of sexual assault.

Shivakumar further claimed that the original demand was Rs 5 crore, which was later reduced to Rs 2 crore. Based on this complaint, the police registered a case against the man and his brother-in-law under sections 384 (extortion), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
