A man died after driving into oncoming traffic, authorities say

BERESFORD, SD (KTIV) – A 28-year-old man was killed Friday morning, July 19, after he drove into oncoming traffic, according to South Dakota authorities.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 5:45 a.m. five miles northeast of Beresford.

According to the patrol, the man was driving a Jeep Cherokee east on 294th Street near 474th Avenue when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane.

According to the Highway Patrol, a tractor-trailer traveling westbound in the roadway was struck head-on by the Jeep Cherokee.

According to police, the driver of the Jeep was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the semi-trailer, who was wearing a seatbelt, suffered minor injuries. Neither driver has been identified.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says this information comes from their preliminary accident investigation.
