Tanker assesses possible oil spill after Houthi attack

The Liberian-flagged tanker Chios Lion turned around after an attack by the Yemeni Houthis on Monday to assess the damage and investigate a possible oil spill, the Joint Maritime Information Center for the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden said on Tuesday.

As part of a wave of attacks by the Houthis on the ship and another vessel traveling about 100 nautical miles northwest of the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah, an unmanned watercraft caused minor damage to the port side of the Chios Lion on Monday.

“While the ship was originally heading south, it turned around after the attack and headed north again out of the danger area to further assess the damage and investigate a possible oil spill,” the JMIC said in a statement. The captain and crew are safe, it added.

The Yemeni Houthis said they attacked the Chios Lion and the Bentley I with ballistic missiles, drones and booby-trapped boats in response to the deadly Israeli airstrike on the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Saturday.
