WARNING from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative: FRAUD ALERT

Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC) has recently received reports of individuals coming onto members’ property posing as REC representatives. These scammers demand access to the property, claim REC will cover the cost of installing solar panels, and present information about a transmission line that does not belong to REC. Please be alert if someone visits your property or contacts you by phone claiming to be from REC.

Keep in mind:

  • REC does not cover the cost of installing solar panels or provide them. We only provide advice on solar energy for homes and businesses.
  • REC staff and contractors use clearly marked vehicles, wear uniforms and carry appropriate identification.
  • REC may occasionally require access to your property for a variety of reasons related to your electricity supply, such as to check a meter or to clear vegetation from rights of way.
  • Report any suspicious visits or calls to local police authorities.

If you are unsure if a visitor or caller is a REC employee, call REC directly at 1-800-552-3904 to confirm. Please pass this warning on to neighbors, friends and family to prevent others from falling victim to this scam.
