Rockford flooded again! Police advise: Stay off the roads | MyStateline

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) – The second severe thunderstorm in two days brought more torrential rain to the Rockford area, causing widespread flooding throughout the city as rescue crews responded to dozens of emergency calls from trapped motorists.

Another flash flood warning was issued on Sunday as heavy rains hit the region.

Rockford police sent out a warning to city residents at 9:10 p.m. Sunday: “We are again receiving reports of flooded streets and stranded cars throughout the city. Please avoid driving if possible. And if you must drive, please turn around if you encounter water on the road.”

Many roads became impassable and motorists were left stranded with their cars stuck in floodwaters, including in areas along E. State, near UW Health SwedishAmerican and further east near Schnucks.

Emergency crews responded to calls from Harrison Avenue, Charles Street, Rural Street, Guilford Road and Spring Creek.

On Saturday evening, some nearby weather stations reported over 6 inches of rainfall in a matter of hours. With extreme rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches per hour, water levels rose quickly, especially along Keith Creek near Charles Street.

The Rockford Fire Department said it responded to more than 120 rescue calls between 11 p.m. Saturday and 6 a.m. Sunday.
