I really want a new Command and Conquer game, but not like this

Command and Conquer: Red Alert is one of the best video game sequels of all time. Westwood follows Tiberian Dawn with a complete aesthetic turnaround – the embellished, pseudo-sci-fi style of the original C&C is replaced and completely reimagined with a borderline black comedy take on the Cold War. Oh, and it features Hell March. The Command and Conquer series is mostly defunct at this point. But the RTS is actually slogging along, via an obscure spin-off that just received a new beta. Featuring Yuri, Tanya, and dozens of recognizable buildings and units, Command and Conquer Red Alert is officially back today. Sort of.

If you’ve never heard of Command and Conquer Legions, it’s a mobile version of the strategy and real-time strategy game currently in development. It looks like C&C. But the gameplay is very stripped down. You basically just tap the screen to build and fight – there’s no strategy at all. Combine that with all the usual features of a free-to-play mobile game, and Legions will be hard to love even for the most devoted C&C fan. Still, it’s reviving Red Alert as part of a new beta.

Legions’ first season is based on an alternate timeline where Yuri was never defeated and the Command and Conquer version of the Cold War still rages. Buildings, units, and characters from the popular subseries return, and there’s a new roguelike mode, as well as skirmish and UI improvements over previous versions of the game.

I’m really Really I want Command and Conquer to come back – the Remastered Collection was so wonderful and the idea of a new Westwood-style C&C is more exciting to me than GTA 6 or Fallout 5. Maybe it will happen. Maybe not. I live in hope.

In the meantime, you can continue to enjoy some of the other best strategy games or perhaps the best 4X games of all time.
