Special needs student attacked by worker in Trumbull: PD

Police say 53-year-old Andre Dickens of Waterbury was arrested for attacking a non-speaking student with special needs with a metal baton.

TRUMBULL, Connecticut — A student with special needs was assaulted Tuesday by an employee of ICES, a vocational rehabilitation program that provides living assistance to adults with disabilities, according to Trumbull police.

Police said Andre Dickens, 53, of Waterbury, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault on a disabled/mentally retarded person. He worked for ICES as a professional caregiver, police said.

According to police, officers were called to the school at 12 Cambridge Drive in Trumbull at 3 p.m. after receiving a complaint about a student being assaulted.

From preliminary information, investigators know that Dickens was sitting in a room early in the morning across from a 41-year-old, non-speaking student who was sitting in a beanbag chair. He then approached the student “for no reason” and began hitting him with a metal baton, police said.

When the student tried to escape from Dickens, police said he was struck multiple times, resulting in cuts and facial injuries.

Dickens had told other staff members that he dropped the student off at Bridgeport Hospital after he tripped and fell, which he said resulted in injuries, police said. Dickens later said he did not hit the student but chased him with his cane.

Police said information they obtained during their investigation, including video footage of the incident, contradicted Dickens’ statements. He is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on July 16.
