JACKSONVILLE, Alabama —

A fireworks technician was injured in an accident before a fireworks display in the city.

The Jacksonville Fire Department announced on social media that the JaxFest fireworks display scheduled for Wednesday night has been canceled.

The fire department said that a contract worker was inserting fuses into the fireworks at around 5 p.m. when an accidental discharge caused the fireworks to ignite.

The worker suffered serious injuries and was flown by rescue helicopter to a hospital in Birmingham for treatment. His condition is stable, the fire department said.

The fire chief said the State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the accident.

The JFD said the fireworks company plans to host another fireworks display at a later date.
