Armed suspect involved in standoff arrested; suspect device deemed secure

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Authorities arrested a man in La Mesa on Tuesday after firing several beanbag rounds at the suspect, who was reaching for what was believed to be a handgun at the time, police said.

At around 6:48 a.m., police received multiple 911 calls reporting a person brandishing a knife and walking in the street in the 5800 block of Kelton Avenue, Katy Lynch of the La Mesa Police Department said in a news release.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man, who appeared to be associated with a white Toyota Yaris parked at the curb, was still armed with the knife. According to police, he then pulled a handgun from a bag and placed the weapon on the curb next to him.

“Officers requested additional forces and attempted to de-escalate the situation, but he continued to pace the street or sit on the curb next to the gun,” Lynch said.

About 20 minutes later, the suspect reached for the gun as an officer fired several beanbag rounds. The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Bryce Segaux of Inglewood, was quickly arrested.

When officers searched the suspect’s vehicle, they discovered a suspicious device consisting of several red 20-liter tanks.

The San Diego Sheriff’s bomb disposal unit was called and temporarily evacuated several residents in the area, but the device was determined to be non-explosive. All residents were able to return to their homes by 10 a.m.

The gun found at the scene was confirmed to be a replica, but the suspect had an outstanding warrant out of Los Angeles and will be booked into the county jail.

Kelton Avenue between El Paso Street and Zeta Street was temporarily closed for several hours during the incident.
