Inmate dies after attack Friday at Kern Valley State Prison

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – A 24-year-old inmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano died Friday after being attacked by three other inmates, prison officials said.

According to a press release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Dwight Gibbs was pronounced dead about an hour after the attack.


According to the CDCR, inmates Michael Brown (55), Jerry Dunham (63) and Rex Dickey (61) were handcuffed without incident and placed in a detention facility until the investigation is completed. Three weapons made by the inmates were confiscated.

Gibbs was serving a 41-year sentence for attempted murder. Brown, Dunham and Dickey are each serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
