A woman dies in a dog attack in Monte Alto

MONTE ALTO, Texas (ValleyCentral) — A woman died after being attacked by a dog Friday night.

At 6:01 p.m., Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office officers responded to an animal bite in the 22000 block of Jesus Flores Road in rural Monte Alto.

When officers arrived at the home, they found an 82-year-old woman lying on the ground behind the home. The woman was bleeding from her neck and the left side of her head, a news release said.

Officers and a family member provided medical care to the woman until emergency services arrived. The woman was taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

HCSO investigators arrived at the scene and spoke with the woman’s brother, who said his sister went outside to feed the dogs when he heard her screaming.

He went outside and saw two of her dogs attacking his sister, authorities said. He tried to lure the dogs away from her, but the dogs tried to attack him. He shot one of the dogs with a shotgun and the other dog ran away.

Animal control has arrested the second dog involved in the incident.

This is an ongoing investigation.
