Coeur d’Alene police release video of racist incident against University of Utah basketball team | Spokane News

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – Just two days after a Coeur d’Alene deputy city attorney declined to file charges against a man suspected of shouting a racial slur and sexual phrases on the University of Utah women’s basketball team police have released a video confirming this report of what happened.

A company security video clearly confirms that a man shouted “I hate N-words, but I would fuck you” from a car as he drove past a group of women.

The video police obtained from Clark’s Jewelers is time stamped March 21 at 7:16 p.m

That same evening, a University of Utah supporter called police to alert them that the team was the subject of racial harassment. The jeweler is located between the Coeur d’Alene Resort and the Crafted Tap House on Sherman Avenue, where the players told police they went on foot.

The team remained in Coeur d’Alene while playing in the early rounds of the NCAA Tournament, hosted by Gonzaga University.

Police also released a 54-page report detailing the investigation that tracked down 18-year-old Post Falls High School student Anthony Myers as the man behind the statement.

According to this report, Myers spoke to police several times in early April. Myers admitted multiple times to saying the N-word, but argued that another friend in the car was actually behind the phrase caught on video.

Detective Khalil Newbill was unconvinced by Myers’ claims that a friend was behind the comments.

“I told Anthony that it was difficult to believe anything he said because he had already lied to me three times at that point,” Newbill wrote in the report.

A friend told police Myers frequently used the N-word.

“He said Anthony said the ‘N-word’ a lot, but not in a racist way,” Newbill wrote.

Newbill concluded that there were no threats and no actions intended to harm anyone, and as a result he did not charge or arrest Myers with a crime.

The prosecution agreed.
