Two young children in the Northern Cape who were raped by their stepfather recently received JUSTICE.

The Postmasburg District Court ensured that the stepfather was faced with the full force of the law.

According to Northern Cape Provincial Police spokesperson Sergeant Omphile Maseela, the two victims, who were six and seven years old at the time of the incident, confided in their aunt about the cruel abuse.

During one visit, they told her that her stepfather had ordered them to come and sleep with him and then raped them both while her mother was sleeping.

Despite the mother’s suspicion and fear of the perpetrator, the case came to light when it was reported to the Danielskuil SAPS on 19 October 2018.

The stepfather was arrested a few days later in Groblershoop, but initially evaded justice by violating the bail conditions.

His subsequent arrest on September 30, 2020 resulted in his pre-trial detention for the duration of the trial.

On June 10, 2024, the court convicted the defendant on two counts of rape and subsequently imposed a life sentence for both counts. In addition, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm and placed on the National Sex Offender Registry.

The SAPS Provincial Commissioner in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, was “delighted” with the verdict and praised the “meticulous investigation” of the case by Sergeant Gaolatlhwe Mongake of the SAPS Domestic Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit in Postmasburg.

Otola added that the SAPS in the Northern Cape will continue to prioritise the safety of children and vulnerable groups and ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and victims of GBVF-related crimes receive justice.
